One of my favorite Gala’s is coming up!

2019 Black Creativity Gala

The Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago (MSI) will host its 37th annual Black Creativity black-tie gala on Saturday, January 25, 2020. The Gala raises money to support MSI’s annual Black Creativity program and its events, which pay tribute to the culture, heritage and scientific contributions of African Americans and help motivate youth in science, technology, engineering, art and medicine.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Black Creativity program at MSI, which began in collaboration with the Chicago Defender. The Gala is among a robust calendar of experiences and events throughout Black History Month. “The Black Creativity Gala has been a part of MSI for decades, providing this impactful program support for the next generation of innovators,” said David Mosena, president and CEO of MSI. “We’re proud to be able to showcase the achievements of African-American leaders across STEM fields, and share their stories with the thousands of families and students who visit MSI throughout Black History Month.”

The Gala is co-chaired by Dr. Eric Whitaker, Founder and CEO of Zing Health Inc., Dr. Cheryl R. Whitaker, Chairwoman and CEO of NextLevel Health Partners, Inc., Joe Dominguez, CEO of ComEd, and Cheryl Harris, senior vice president at Allstate Insurance Company.

“The Black Creativity program has continued to display the accomplishments of African Americans providing generations of kids with endless possibilities of who they can be in math, science, technology, and creative industries,” said Dr. Cheryl R. Whitaker, Chairwoman and CEO of NextLevel Health Partners, Inc. “We are excited to partner with the Museum of Science and Industry again to bring our energy and desire to continue this important cause.”

The evening will start with guests enjoying cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the annual Black Creativity Juried Art Exhibition, featuring more than 200 original works of art from African-American student and professional artists. After cocktails, guests will head to the Museum’s Rotunda where they will enjoy food stations provided by Sodexo. Dinner options will include, a selection of fresh sushi prepared in front of guest by sushi chefs, grits and crayfish ragout, apple candy smoked turkey, sage infused sweet potato spaetzle vegetable cassoulet, a dessert bar and more.

WGN Meteorologist Demetrius Ivory will emcee the evening’s presentation, and guests will enjoy live musical entertainment from Chicago Children’s Choir, DJ Rae Chardonnay, Yanna Cello, Rockstar Ev, and Manasseh Croft.

After dinner the Museum’s exhibits and hands-on experiences will be open, including the Black Creativity Innovation Studio and the Black Creativity: 50 Years exhibit. Guests will also be able to explore Museum favorites including Science Storms, The Great Train Story, Numbers in Nature: A Mirror Maze, and many more.

About the 2020 Black Creativity Program

Event Alert! 🚨 @Expochicago is BACK at Navy Pier! Event Alert! 🚨 @Expochicago is BACK at Navy Pier! (April 9th - 12th) I always love going Opening Night. EXPO CHICAGO Contemporary Art Fair showcases leading contemporary and modern art galleries alongside a diverse and inventive program of
talks, on-site installations, and public art initiatives.

Great performance by @dcomposedchicago! 🎻

Last night I attended Dialogues, which is an onsite discussion offering a deeper look at some of the themes, artists, and partnerships at the fair. I attended the panel 𝐀𝐑𝐓 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐎𝐛𝐚𝐦𝐚 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫: 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐠𝐨’𝐬 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐢𝐝𝐞 (Moderated by: Virginia Shore (Curator of commissions, Obama Presidential Center)).

The conversation brought together a selection of contributing artists from the Obama Presidential Center’s commissioned art collection to share their ideas, research, and process driving these significant public commissions. Speakers explored how they are responding to the cultural and civic bison of the Center (opening this June) and the profound significance of creating new work for this landmark institution on Chicago’s South Side. @Obamafoundation
