Traveling to Belize was a bit spontaneous. My friend called me on MLK day and was like “I wanna get away want to go to Belize? This is a friend I travel with quite often and I immediately said yes. We planned our trip on a three hour phone call that day.
We didn’t know much about Belize aside from the Madonna song, La Isla Bonita. She dreamt of San Pedro, so I wanted to experience it too. LOL. The very first thing we looked up was the weather. February sits right in the heart of Belize’s dry season, offering warm sunshine, minimal rainfall. Temps are between 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit during the day.
So for those wondering where exactly is Belize located? Belize is a Central American country on the Caribbean coast, bordered by Mexico, Guatemala, and the Caribbean Sea. We spent most of our vacation in San Pedro, Belize which is situated on the southern part of Ambergris Caye. Ambergris Caye is off the northeastern coast of Belize and is the largest town on the Island.
Let the Adventure Begin
Trip to Belize: February 27th – March 4th
The shortest flight time to Belize from Chicago (if you fly direct) is about 4 1/2 hours. Both our flights to and from Belize had a layover. On the way there we had a hour layover in Charlotte and on the way back we had a 2 hour layover in Miami.
We arrived at the Belize City airport and there’s two options to get to San Pedro. You can take a 15 minute plane ride which will cost your around $100 one way OR you can take a 90 minute water taxi which will cost you around $60 round trip.
I was told it’s cheaper to buy your water taxi tickets online versus when you get there. The one thing that sort of sucks about the water taxi is they do not run that frequently. We landed at Noon and there was either a 1:30pm water taxi or a 3pm water taxi (and remember it takes about 90 minutes to get to the Island. With that said plan for way more than 90 minutes. We landed at 11:30am, took the 1:30pm water taxi and got to our hotel around 4:30. NOT worth it, take the plane (we did on the way back to Belize City).
Where did we stay?
We stayed at Bananas on the Beach which is located Seagrape Drive, 66. It’s about a 10 minute car ride from the water taxi. The location is perfect! The newly renovated hotel is just steps away from the beach. I love that our hotel is right on the oceanfront, but we also have a pool and a hotel restaurant called Gonzalo and the Princess. The restaurant is a tribute to Belize’s Mestizo roots, where Mayan and Spanish traditions merge through food. We ended up having dinner here our last night and the food was pretty good. I
The first thing I like to do when I land is absolutely nothing. The actual travel part wears me out. The only thing I planned for the day of our arrival was dinner.
Where did we go for dinner? What activities did we do? What were our favorite beaches?
