Israel Idonije Partnered with The Team Behind Olivers to Open an Italian-Inspired Day-to-Night Third Space in the South Loop Neighborhood
In September, Buttercup delivered on its promise to be home to “the world’s best amaro party.” From the mind of former Bears player and entrepreneur Israel Idonije, Buttercup was crafted as a partnership between his hospitality group, Pangea Restaurant Group, and the team behind Oliver’s. Bringing their legacy of unparalleled hospitality and commitment to elevating the dining scene in Chicago’s emerging South Loop (SoLo) neighborhood, these teams have crafted a unique dual concept for the area. As a café by light and amaro bar by night, Buttercup will blend the Italian traditions of café-culture and lively amaro bars, infusing both with Chicago’s sense of hospitality and creativity to develop day-to-night third space.
Located at 75 E 16th Street, the 40-seat space has been thoughtfully built to create two distinct “moments” for its guests. For the early morning SoLo crowd Buttercup serves as a refined yet relaxed café, taking tradition from European café culture. From evening to late night, the 900 sq. ft. space transforms into an intimate cocktail bar with bold amaro-centric cocktails.
I went to experience Buttercup for myself and I had a fantastic Happy Hour experience. I started with the Black Manhattan, which I highly recommend. Once the the drink hits the table you can smell the smokiness from the charred pineapple. Such an interesting twist on a classic cocktail.
Buttercup’s beverage program was carefully curated by Beverage Director Luke DeYoung, who has worked for years with Chicago’s hospitality heavy hitters including Scofflaw and Oliver’s. Drawing from Buttercup‘s expansive amaro selection, one of the largest in the country, DeYoung has crafted a tight lineup of innovative amaro-centric takes on cocktail mainstays, as well as curious new beverages which push the bounds of the city’s beverage scene.
Chef Alex Carnovale, of Oliver’s and The French Laundry, has masterfully crafted a nighttime menu of Italian-inspired classics which offer options such as their charcuterie plate and rotating gelatos, as well as plates for guests seeking out a full meal (like the pork collar or truffle pizzetta).
My favorites would have to be the anchovy toast, roasted garlic Caesar salad, and the pistachio cake is a must! Follow along for more updates on Buttercup by visiting Instagram @sipbuttercup and www.sipbuttercup.com.
