North America’s leading whisky festival was back in Chicago Friday, November 15th. WhiskyFest presented by Whisky Advocate Magazine had over hundreds of whiskies from around the world, fun and educational master classes throughout the evening, and a delicious buffet.
I went the VIP route, which means you get to start your adventure an hour early and try some whisky selections only showcased during VIP hour. One of the VIP whisky’s we were on the hunt for was Laphroaig 36 yr. They didn’t have it, but they did have a 25 yr which was excellent. I also loved having my tried and true favorites: Jefferson’s Ocean and Bulleit Rye.
In no particular order, here are the whisky’s I had and loved:
- Laphroaig 25 yr.
- Jefferson’s Ocean
- Jefferson’s Reserve
- Redemption 18 yr.
- Mary Dowling Tequila Finish
- Minden Mill Rye
- Heaven Hill Grain to Glass Rye
- Fuji Whisky Single Grain
- Hibiki Suntory whisky
- Middle West Spirits Straight Rye
Some interesting things that stood out were Mary Dowling whisky finished in tequila barrels. Heaven Hill grain to glass rye coming in with a whopping 123 proof. Fuji single grain whisky which was Whisky Advocate’s #19 whisky of the year in 2023.
One thing you must take advantage of at WhiskyFest are the master classes. I attended Redemption Whisky master class. Master Blender Alan Kennedy led us on a journey exploring Redemption’s award-winning rye whiskeys, including Redemption Rye, Redemption Sur Lee, Redemption 10-Year-Old Barrel-Proof Rye, 18-Year-Old Barrel-Proof Rye.
During the Master Class, Alan showcased the artistry behind each expression, including his unique production methods, aging processes, and blending techniques that create Redemption’s signature smooth, yet bold, flavors. What a great and insightful class!
I highly recommend attending Whiskyfest when it’s back in town. You can stay posted by visiting WhiskyFest.com.
